EastEnders delivered another on-screen surprise in Tuesday’s episode (July 22) as Nicholas Bailey was seen reprising his role as Anthony Trueman.

Anthony returned to Walford for a short visit after hearing that his father Patrick (Rudolph Walker) had suffered a major stroke.

As he arrived back on Albert Square, Anthony caught up with his ex-girlfriend Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) before heading to the hospital to see Patrick.

Although Anthony was clearly concerned for Patrick, he was stung when his confused father mistook him for his late half-brother Paul.

As Anthony also felt that he doesn’t share a strong bond with Patrick following their difficult history, he eventually made the controversial decision to depart Walford again – leaving Denise Fox to take charge of Patrick’s care.

Before making his departure, Anthony guiltily handed Denise (Diane Parish) a £2,000 cheque to help with the financial cost of caring for Patrick.

Anthony was an EastEnders regular between 2000 and 2003. He later returned for guest stints in 2004 and 2005.

Show bosses kept the character’s reappearance under wraps so that viewers would be surprised by tonight’s episode – a tactic previously used successfully for the returns of Jane Beale, Honey Mitchell and Rainie Cross this year.
